When exploring wedding photography options, you may have heard the term “pre-wedding shoot.” If you’re unfamiliar with the lingo, it can seem a bit unclear. Don’t worry—I’m here to explain exactly what it is, why it’s beneficial, and how you can make the most of it!
Simply put, a pre-wedding shoot is a photo session with your photographer before the big day. It’s sometimes called an “engagement shoot” or “couple shoot,” but all these terms refer to the same thing!
Why Have a Pre-Wedding Shoot?
At first, you might wonder why a pre-wedding shoot is necessary. After all, you’ll have plenty of photos taken on your wedding day, right? That’s exactly why a pre-wedding shoot can be so valuable—it’s a “test run.” It allows you to get comfortable in front of the camera and shake off any initial awkwardness. What may feel strange at first will soon turn into a fun and natural experience!
Another major benefit is that it gives you a chance to get familiar with your photographer. While meeting face-to-face is helpful, an actual photo session can ease any nerves about being photographed on your big day. It’s also an opportunity to see how your photographer works and what they can do—this is why I offer all couples a complimentary short pre-wedding shoot before they finalize their photographer.
What’s Next After Booking a Pre-Wedding Shoot?
Great! You’ve scheduled your pre-wedding shoot. Now what? Here are a few tips to ensure you make the most of your session:
Dress Thoughtfully
You don’t have to wear formal attire, but be mindful of your outfit choice. Select something that makes you feel comfortable and confident—something you won’t regret later. Think of it as a professional portrait session—because that’s exactly what it is!Collaborate with Your Photographer
Your photographer isn’t there to boss you around. If you have ideas or want to try something specific, speak up! Wedding photography is a partnership, and the best results come from working together.Embrace the Awkwardness
Many couples tell me they hate having their photos taken. Trust me, I get it! But the best way to deal with this is to embrace the awkwardness. Laugh about it, and soon enough, you’ll find that the photos capture genuine, joyful moments.Discuss Your Wedding Day
Use your pre-wedding shoot as an opportunity to chat with your photographer about your wedding plans. We love discussing all things wedding-related, and it helps us better understand your vision. Plus, we might offer some valuable advice along the way!Enjoy the Experience
This might sound cliché, but it’s important—have fun! Treat your pre-wedding shoot as a special day. Explore a new location, try something fresh, and maybe even plan a nice meal afterward. Wedding planning can be stressful, but this is your chance to relax and enjoy the experience while looking forward to the beautiful photos that will come from it!
